Frequently Asked Questions

What are the first aid requirements for Australian workplaces?

Under the WHS Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace, employers must provide first aid equipment, facilities, and trained first aiders appropriate to the nature of the work and workplace hazards. The number of first aiders depends on the risk level and number of workers. Low-risk workplaces need one first aider per 50 workers, while high-risk workplaces need one per 25 workers as a general guide.

What qualifications do workplace first aiders need?

Workplace first aiders should hold a current nationally recognised qualification such as HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. This qualification is valid for three years, with the CPR component requiring annual refresher training. Additional qualifications such as advanced first aid, oxygen therapy, or anaphylaxis management may be appropriate depending on your workplace risks.

What should be included in a workplace first aid kit?

A basic workplace first aid kit should include adhesive bandages, sterile wound dressings, triangular bandages, roller bandages, adhesive tape, scissors, tweezers, disposable gloves, resuscitation mask, saline solution for eye irrigation, and an instant cold pack. Additional items may be needed based on specific workplace hazards. Check the Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice for the recommended contents.
